
Second Grade
Curriculum
RELIGION
We strive to assist in the development of spiritual
awareness of the total individual; physical, emotional, and intellectual.
We explore the many facets by which God shows his love for us; creation,
forgiveness, families, friends, and sacraments. We learn that we are
active participants in creation and salvation. The Catholic church and its
members are a family. All members have a responsibility to seek God, live
by the examples of Jesus Christ and share their faith with others. Our
Family Life program teaches children to celebrate all the good things that are a
part of every family and assists the family in reaching its full God-given
potential.
The student will:
- learn that they belong to a Christian Community
- learn about the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation,
and Holy Eucharist
- prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation
- identify the different parts of the mass in preparation
for the study and reception of the Holy Eucharist
- learn about Advent and Lent and the meaning of these
prayerful seasons of the church
- learn the following prayers; Our Father, Hail Mary,
Glory Be, Act of Contrition, Petitions
MATHEMATICS
In second grade we focus on building number sense and
extending mathematical ability with thorough instruction in all key strands -
requiring children to become active decision-makers.
Numeration:
- read, write, and order numbers to 999
- compare numbers using the symbols for >, <, or =
- count by 2's, 3's, 5's, 10's, and 100's
- identify even and odd numbers
- define place value to the hundreds
Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication:
- add and subtract one, two, and three digit numbers with
and without regrouping
- add and subtract money amounts
- introduction to multiplication and division
Problem Solving
- recognize and extend patterns
- choose operations (add, subtract, or multiply) for word
problems
- identify irrelevant data in word problems
- read and interpret picture and bar graphs
- solve problems using a table
- determine if an answer to a problem is reasonable
- interpret map distances
Time/Money/Measurement
- tell time to 5 minute intervals
- give elapsed time
- identify and label money amounts using dollars and
cents notation
- compare money amounts
- measure length and weight using U.S. standard and
metric systems
- read and interpret temperature on a thermometer
Geometry/Factions
- identify spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes, and
rectangular prisms
- identify circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles
- identify number of sides, corners, and square corners
- identify congruent figures
- identify lines of symmetry
- identify fractional part of a whole
LANGUAGE ARTS
Students will learn to read classic and contemporary
literature and acquire the language arts tools relevant to successful reading
and writing development. By achieving this goal children will experience
the lifelong rewards of both reading and writing.
Reading; the student will:
- summarize a story, poem, or literary text
- acquire listening, speaking, reading, and writing
vocabularies within the context of reading or listening to literature,
classroom reading basals, and other texts
- learn to comprehend a story by employing comprehension
techniques such as: characterization, story structure, comparison, context
clues, drawing conclusions, following directions, inferencing, main idea and
details, predicting outcomes, differentiating between reality/fantasy, and
sequencing
Phonics; the student will:
- associate appropriate sounds with digraphs and
trigraphs and decode them in context
- associate appropriate sounds with gh, l -controlled
vowels, silent letters gn, kn, wr, and decode them in text
- associate appropriate sounds and meanings with suffixes
"ly", "y", "ful", "less", and "est" and prefixes "un", "re", and "dis" and
decode them in context
- recognize the spelling changes y to i, l, and fe to v
and decode them in context
- alphabetize words to the third letter
- recognize that each syllable has one vowel sound
Writing/Grammar; the student will:
- use capital letters, periods, question marks,
exclamation marks, and commas
- recognize adverbs, adjectives, nouns, verbs and
pronouns
- write a poem, invitation, thank you note, and a one
paragraph friendly letter
- be introduced to guide words
- use the writing process steps (prewriting, writing,
revising, and presenting)
Listening/Speaking; the student will:
- listen to stories and poetry that will enhance their
appreciation for literature
- listen to informational text which requires them to be
attentive and recall specific details
- listen and follow directions
- listen critically to literature
- speak for specific purposes
- learn to introduce themselves and others
- participate in choral speaking, reading and reciting
- retell and dramatize a story
- participate in group discussions
- give oral presentation (book reports)
Spelling:
The spelling program is based upon the integration of the
second grade reading vocabulary and phonological skills. It employs
phonological clues, word structure clues, analogy clues, and visual memory to
develop age-appropriate Standard English spelling ability.
Handwriting:
The student will review manuscript handwriting strokes and
be introduced to D'Nealian upper and lower case cursive letters.
