Welcome To First Grade

Welcome to a new school year.  I look forward to working with you and your child.  I welcome back eight families-having taught their other child or children in past years, and for the first time in my teaching experience, I welcome the child of one of my former students!

We're off to a great start in the academics.  In our reader, we read the story "Clap your Hands" focusing on action words.  The children read and acted out many verbs.  Each morning, we review vowel sounds and story vocabulary words.  This week, your child will begin to bring home vocabulary words to review and learn.

In mathematics, the children have solved addition sentences and added penny amounts.  This week, the children will change the order of addends to write related addition sentences.  For example; 5+2, 2+5.

After the children received Coming to God, their religion book, we had a classroom welcoming prayer service where we thanked God for bringing us together.

Please note, first graders will have P.E. on Mondays. I know they're looking forward to their first class!

Written homework will begin the week of September 8th.  Your child will be given a homework packet on Monday to be completed and returned by Friday morning.  For the week of September 1st, please read to your child or have your child read to you each evening for 10 to 15 minutes.

Thank you for all you and your children have done to start the new school year.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Karen O'Bannion
