All About Second Grade

Teachers: Mrs. Lisa Villarreal and Mrs. Carol Heenan

School begins @ 8:00 a.m.
School ends @
3:00 p.m.

Please make sure that your child gets to school on time.

FOLDERS:

The children have 3 folders in their desk. One is a Science folder for Science papers. The second folder is a work folder. This folder holds all the papers that your child is working on in class or in the process of finishing. The third folder is the folder to go home. This folder goes home every night and is to be brought back to school every morning. It is your child's responsibility to pack it back into his/her school bag. Any notes from the office, corrected school papers, spelling list, and homework packets will be sent home to you in this folder daily. Make sure you look through your child's folder to go home every night. Anything you need to send to us or the office can be put in this folder too. Having these 3 folders really helps a child stay organized and on task. There is nothing worse than having a bunch of crumbled up papers shoved in the back of the desk.

HOMEWORK:

Every Monday, your child will be bringing home a weekly homework packet. The homework packet is due Friday morning. Please make sure your child does not try to rush through the packet in one night. Follow the directions for each night.

If your child does not turn in his/her homework on Friday morning, he/she will be given a Homework Alert. Receiving these can result in grades being lower. It is your child's responsibility to make sure the homework is put back in the "folder to go home" before arriving to school. It is not the parent's responsibility.

Your child will get a Spelling list every Monday. The pre-test will be every Thursday. The regular spelling test will be on Fridays. Make sure your child studies the list every night. Please make sure that your child reads to you for at least 15 minutes every night.

If your child is absent on Friday, there will be no make up Spelling Test.

CLASSROOM RULES:

The classroom rules are posted in the classroom. The children have also made a classroom rulebook. Each child has signed the cover of this book.

In 2nd grade we use paper dimes. Dimes are given out to students who are following directions and demonstrating positive behavior. Children who are not following directions will be warned one time. After the second warning, the child will have to put one of his/her dimes in the sad sack. If a child has had to put a second dime in the sad sac that day he/ she will have to spend 10 minutes on the bench during recess. Children get to bid for classroom jobs with the dimes. This is a great math skill. The children count out their dimes to see if they have enough money to buy the job. The jobs are line leaders, prayer leaders, closet shutters, turning on & off the classroom computers, lights, and board erasers.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:

Each week, a student is chosen to be "Student of the Week".  A student will be picked for that job if he or she displayed good manners, respect in the classroom and followed directions for that week.

A student will be chosen every Friday afternoon.  Your child will be sent home with a special poster to be completed over the weekend.  On Monday, the poster is returned to school.  Your child will get to read and share his/her poster in front of the class.  The poster will then be hung up on the "I AM SPECIAL" bulletin board.

POETRY PERSON:

Each student will also have a chance to be the "Poetry Person".  The "Poetry Person" will be picked on Friday afternoons also based on his/her good behavior for that week.  Your child will get to pick a poetry book to bring home and a blank poster.  Let your child glance through the book until he/she finds a poem that interests him/her.  Read the poem together and then have your child read it out loud to you.  Practice reading the poem a few times.

Once a poem has been chosen, your child copies the poem onto the poster.  Please print neatly in pencil and then go over the words in crayon or maker.

At the bottom of the poem, have your child do an illustration.  On Monday your child will share and read the poem to the class.  The poem will then be hung up on the poetry wall.

BIRTHDAYS:

Your child's birthday will be recognized during morning announcements. We have a birthday certificate and miniature paper birthday cake that we give to each child. We always remember to sing "Happy Birthday" in class. It would be a special and generous idea if your child could give a book for the classroom library or any other items for the classroom.

Example: play equipment. It's a nice gesture rather than bringing in cupcakes, cookies and juice for the class. Many times the children take one bite of the treat and then throw it in the garbage. A book is a special gift/ treat that will last forever.

FIELD TRIPS:

There are lots of opportunities for parents and grandparents to join us on our field trips.  Please, check our Calendar on the webpage for upcoming field trips and opportunities to help.

LUCKY BOOK CLUB:

Each month your child will be bringing home a flyer from Scholastic Lucky Book Club.  You are not obligated to buy books but it is a great way to build your child's home library with different literature.

Please make sure that you send a check made out to Scholastic Book Club. Please do not send cash

Do not forget to write your child's name on the back of the order form
